DNA: Jeff Waugh has a My Heritage DNA match with Carol Fegan who has George Barclay and Margaret McCorquindale through their daughter Elizabeth (and down through Mary Armstrong & James Paterson) in her tree. Glenda Waugh (my sister) has a My Heritage DNA match with Christine Waddell who has Margaret McCorquindale (born March 18, 1805, daughter of Alexander McCorquindale and Barbara Waugh) in her tree. Margaret emigrated to Australia (possibly with  Duncan McCorquindale who emigrated in 1852). Glenda also has an Ancestry.com DNA match with Rick Clark who has Duncan McCorquodale (son of Malcolm McCorquindale and Bridget Little) born in Canonbie on March 2, 1701, in his tree (and indicates his wife as Anna Barclay born about 1706 in Fife). We also have a few Ancestry.com DNA matches with Barclays in Ayrshire.

George Barclay and Margaret McCorquindale had a son William born on April 13, 1772. Isabella Barclay's father was (according to her death certificate) William Barclay, Hostler (person looking after horses at an inn).

George Barclay & Margaret McCorquindale

George Barclay and Margaret McCorquindale (probably the daughter of Alexander McCorquindale and Betty Sheil) were probably married around 1763. They had at least ten children born in Barrascrofts, "Woodhead" and "Old Woodhead", Canonbie, Dumfriesshire. William Barclay (wife unknown) is probably the father of Isabella Barclay (born about 1810) who married George Waugh.

The McCorquodale / McCorquindale Family of Thorniewhats Farm

The surname McCorquodale is an Anglicisation of the Gaelic MacThorcadail (or MacCorcadail), meaning "son of Torcadal". The Gaelic personal name Torcadal is of Norse origin and means "Thor's kettle"[1][2] (a more romanticised meaning for the name has been given as "cauldron of the thunder spirit").... The founder of the clan, according to legend, was a Thorkil (Torcadal) who was a member of the Scots army under Kenneth MacAlpin. The legendary story states that Alpin, father of Kenneth MacAlpin, was killed in battle, and his head was carried off by enemy Picts. Alpin's head was then displayed in the Pictish town of Camelon. The story goes on to state that the claimed ancestor of the McCorquodales, Thorkil, recovered Alpin's head. For this deed, Thorkil was said to have been rewarded with lands on Loch Awe side.[6] Be that as it may, the earliest record of the clan occurs in the 15th century. The Barons McCorquodale are recorded at this time, as holding sway over lands in Argyll, west of Loch Awe. They were centred at Phantelane (Anglicised from the Scottish Gaelic: Fionnt Eilean),[6] or the "white island". Eilean-a-Bharain (from Scottish Gaelic: "the baron's island") was located in Loch Tromlee, on which their castle was located. Today the loch has been affected by drainage, the site of the castle ruins is no longer always an island.[3] At one point in time, the entire shore of Loch Awe from Avich to Ard-an-aiseig was owned by the chiefs of the clan. - from Wikipedia. See Clan McCorquodale and Barony of Phantelane

The Armstrongs, The History of a Raiding Family, 1040-1650, Derek James Stewart, 2017

"By 1530, just over two years later, Johnnie is dead, hung by the neck at Carlenrig on what appears to have been once his own lands held of Maxwell. Maxwell himself at the time was in ward in Edinburgh, yet within a month was free and benefiting by the grant of all Johnnie's goods, movable and unmovable, debts, tacks(rents), obligations, sums of money, gifts of non-entries and all items pertaining to him. (Reg. Sec Sig., Vol viii, folio 195). This of course included the lands of Nether and Over Thorniewhats. But what of Gilnockie? The lands of Nether Thorniewhats upon which the castle of Gilnockie was built, and the lands of Over Thorniewhats were the property of the Prior of Canonbie, and let to Maxwell. Was this another benefaction of Maxwell to our forebear? The Armstrongs had built another tower at Over Thorniewhats the site of which lies close to the present farmyard and who were still living there in the early 17th century. These two lands extended to about 5 square miles." - from Alan Armstrong, The Armstrong Chronicles, April, 2005

William Barclay and Jane Ritchie (probably the daughter of John Ritchie and Janet Graham born in Middlebie May 31, 1831 - from Scotland's People) had a son John born in Donkins, Middlebie, Dumfriesshire, on March 9, 1848. Donkins is literally "around-the-corner" from where Isabella Barclay was living with her husband George Waugh in the 1851 Scotland Census but we have not been able to confirm a family connection. It appears as though Jane Ritchie may not have married William Barclay. She apparently appears as Jane Greenlaw (30) (married to Thomas Greenlaw) in the 1861 Canada Census for Simcoe, Ontario, with John Barclay (13) living with them.

John Barclay died in Glenwood, Brandon, Manitoba, on April 28, 1923, at the age of 76.

William John Barclay and Hattie Stewart were married in Winnipeg on March 16, 1910 (from Manitoba Marriage Index). In the 1911 Canada Census John is living (as a widower) in Brandon, Manitoba, with his son Robert (28) and Robert's wife Naomi (25). Robert Barclay died in Souris, Brandon, Manitoba, on March 5, 1948 (from  Robert Bredin re: A Main Tree on Ancestry.com). Innisfil fighting to save historic Barclay House

Innisfil fighting to save historic Barclay House

Innisfil Heritage Committee chair Deb Crawford is relieved the Town of Innisfil is working to save the Barclay House from demolition. In May, the town learned of a demolition application on the 1841 building, which served as the town’s post office. On June 22, council agreed to have staff negotiate with the property owners on using the stone facade of the house either on or off the property. The Barclay house is already on the municipal heritage registry, but now the town has given notice of its intent to designate the property under the Ontario Heritage Act.

“It’s unfortunate the property burned at the end of December 2014. But even though it’s been vacant and there hasn’t been any real activity in the building, there is potential,” Crawford said. “There was always the hope the property owner would want to do something with (the Barclay house) and not demolish it or leave it vacant.”

Crawford noted in the past, the town has worked with developers to honour the town’s past. Most recently, the Abandel Group paid to relocate a 150-year-old Alcona home, and include it as part of its townhouse development.

“It preserves the history of the property and the structure, while still allowing progress to take place,” Crawford said.
