William Brockie & Agnes Rogerson | John Brockie & Mary Green | Agness Brockie & George Bathgate

"MacGeorge, originally Mac Jore, the surname of an old family which, from an early period was settled in Galloway. Towards the middle of the 17th century they had became divided into several branches - all land proprietors and all in the same district, chiefly in the parish of Urr. There were branches of several distinguished Irish families settled in Galloway, such as the clan Carthy (called in that district as Macartney) and others: and the late Mr Brydson, the author of an excellent work on Heraldry, is of the opinion that the family Macgeorge is descended from the ancient Irish clan Mac Yoris, which had settled, he says, at an early period, in Galloway, and which in the time of Henry 11, was reckoned among the great families of Ireland. This is confirmed by the manner in which the name at and early period was pronounced and spelt in Galloway." - Extract from the 'Scottish Nation', or the Historical and genealogical account of all Scottish families and surnames' James MacVeigh, Dumfries, Scotland 1891

It appears that Thomas Brockie was involved in a scandal that involved alleged adultery and subsequent divorce proceedings between Sir William Jardine the 5th Baronet of Applegarth (formerly Captain William Jardine) and his French wife Magdalane Barbarie de la Motte that began around 1786 and continued until at least 1795.

Thomas Brockie, Servant and Gamekeeper to Capt. William Jardine of Applegirth
Brockie, Thomas, Servant and Gamekeeper to Capt. William Jardine of Applegirth
From the Dumfries Weekly Journal, January 8, 1788

The hunt in Scotland is of very ancient origin and many a king of England and Scotland traveled north to participate in the sport which lasted for a week or longer. Scottish nobility who participated in hunts included Malcolm III, Alexander III, James III, James IV, James V, James the VI of Scotland and 1st of England, and Mary Queen of Scots. Much of Scotland was at one time covered with vast tracts of forest which lent itself to the sport. The forests became protected and reserved for royal hunts only. The kings territorial rights entitled him to have possession of large forests and big stocks of game. The middle class hardly ever possessed the right to hunt for large game. Royal hunting lodges were established, providing a place of recreation and pleasure situated close to the hunting grounds. Scottish noblemen were appointed as foresters and given rights of tenure of a section of land by the king. The foresters were the "keepers of the royal forest," employing a gamekeeper, and at hunting time - huntsmen, falconry men, and hound boys. Starting in the 16th century houses were provided in the royal forests for gamekeepers. Many a king brought his favorite hunting dogs with him. A prized possession. They hunted Red deer, wild bears, sows, and boars. Also beasts of Prey: bear, wolf, lynx, beaver, badger, fox, otter, and wild cats.

"This is the joiner's shop, a fascinating place with shadowy corners, the bewitching fitments of a carpenter's bench, a crisp carpet of shavings for small feet to scuffle and struggle through, and in invigorating smell of pine chips in the air. Here are made homely chairs and tables, clogs and pattens, yokes for milk pales, chests for bride-linen, cradles and innumerable other articles." - Reproduced with acknowledgement to Carol Stubbs
