The du Jardon family came over to England in 1066 with William the Conqueror. The name is first found in Scotland in charters to Kelso Abbey and Arbroath Abbey prior to 1153, when Wmfredus de Jardin appears as a witness. In about 1178 Humphrey de Jardin witnessed a charter by Robert Bruce to Arbroath Abbey.

The chiefly line of the Clan Jardine appears to have been established by the fourteenth century at Applegirth on the River Annan in Dumfriesshire. Their first stronghold was Spedlings Tower which was abandoned in the late seventeenth century. From there the family moved across the river to Jardine Hall. This was allegedly to escape the ghost of a miller who had been left to starve to death in the tower's dungeon.

Sir Alexander Jardine of Applegirth was actively involved in defending the Scottish Borders against English incursions. In 1524 Sir Alexander Jardine, along with Lord Maxwell attacked an English host near Carlisle and routed them, taking nearly three hundred English prisoners. However Alexander's son, John Jardine, faced English retribution in 1547 when Lord Wharton, with a force of over five thousand, overran Annandale. The Jardine lands were ravaged and he was forced to submit. Later that year the Jardines and some French troops harried the English and exacted a terrible retribution.

The Jardines followed the Clan Johnstone in supporting Mary, Queen of Scots. However, when the queen married the Earl of Bothwell the Jardines declared allegiance to the infant James VI of Scotland. For the support of his clan, Jardine was to receive a pension from the Archbishopric of Glasgow, but it was never paid.

No age was given for either. - Scotland's People, OPR, Lochmaben There was also a Robert Jardine and Janet Wilson living at Millbank (see below). The connection between the Robert Jardine born 1773 and the Robert Jardine from Millbank that married Agnes Richardson (below) is speculative.

1773 ..........

Robert Jardine (son of Andrew Jardine and Elizabeth Johnstone) was born on Jan 31, 1773, in Castlemains, Lochmaben. Castlemains was comprised of the Mains as well as the Castelmains cottages (both farmsteads) located a very short distance from Lochmaben Castle. "In roughly 1280, William Wallace gave the Lochmaben castle to Johnstone of Eskdale, who apparently was his kinsman. Sir John Johnstone, grandson of the aforementioned Sir John, was a highly active leader on the border and resisted the English quite well from 1377 through 1379. He fought against the English armies at the Battle of Solway Moss in 1378. The Johnstones were also at the Battle of Otterburn in 1388... During the Civil War, the Clan Johnstone supported the Royalist cause of King Charles. In 1633, King Charles I awarded lordship to the Johnstone chief, Sir James Johnstone, as the Lord Johnstone; ten years later Charles made him the Earl of Hartfell. After King Charles I was defeated in the Civil War, both the Johnstone chief and his eldest son were imprisoned in Dumbarton Castle and Edinburgh Castle. However, after the Stuart Monarchs returned to the throne, King Charles II rewarded the Johnstones' loyalty by granting Lord Hartfell the titles of Earl of Hartfell and Annandale, Viscount of Annan, and Lord Johnstone of Lochwood, Lochmaben, Moffatdale and Evandal. The Johnstones were later Jacobites." from Clan Johnstone, Wikipedia

1802 ..........

Andrew Jardine died Nov 23, 1793 (from Monumental Inscriptions - Applegarth and Sibbaldie Parish - January, 1972, George Gilchrist) leaving his wife to raise their children. David later provided William with enough money to attend medical school in Edinburgh and William went on to become a well-known surgeon. In 1802, at the age of 18, he served as ship's surgeon aboard the East India Company's Brunswick and by 1832 had established  Jardine, Metheson & Company, Ltd. in China. The Chinese referred to him as "Tai-Pan" or Great Manager. - from William Jardine, Wikipedia

1832 ..........

Jardine, Matheson & Company is formally registered July 1 by former East India Company merchant ship's surgeon William Jardine and his Scottish-born aristocratic junior partner James Matheson, 36, who 9 years ago purchased the 18-gun brig Curlew, renamed her the Jamesina, and has been using her to run opium from India into China (see 1820; Russell & Co., 1830). Now 48, the Scottish-born Jardine is known to the Chinese as "Iron-Headed Old Rat" because he refused to run from a beating at the gates of Guangzhou (Canton), where he tried to present a petitition. Moralists raise objections to the opium trade, but the British have been expanding poppy cultivation in India, and a new report states that "the monopoly of opium in Bengal supplies the Government with a revenue amounting in sterling money to £981,293 per annum . . . it does not appear advisable to abandon so important a source of revenue." Jardine will say in his company bulletin The Opium Circular, "If the trade is ever legalized, it will cease to become profitable from that time. The more difficulties that attend it, the better for you and for us." One sixth of British India's gross national product comes from opium exports, and those exports will reach 30,000 chests per year by 1835 (see politics, 1839). - From Answers.com World Chronolgy: 1832

Sir Robert Jardine (son of David Jardine of Muirhousehead)

Sir Robert Jardine, 1st Baronet (24 May 1825 - 17 February 1905) was a Scottish businessman and Liberal politician. Jardine was born at Edinburgh the son of David Jardine of Muir House, Lockerbie, Dumfries and his wife Rachel Johnstone. He was head of Jardine, Matheson and Co, merchants in China in 1865.[1]

At the general election in July 1865, Jardine was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashburton in Devon[2] where his uncle William Jardine had been an earlier MP. The Ashburton constituency was abolished at the 1868 general election and he was elected instead at Dumfries Burghs.[3] In 1874 he changed seat again and stood unsuccessfully for Dumfriesshire. However he was elected at the next election in March 1880[4] and held the seat until he stood down at the 1892 general election.[5] Jardine was created 1st Baronet Jardine, of Castlemilk, Dumfries on 20 July 1885. He was J.P. and Deputy Lieutenant of Perthshire. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.[6]

Jardine lived at Castle Milk, Lockerbie. He died aged 79.

Jardine married Margaret Seton Hamilton, daughter of John Buchanan Hamilton, and sister and heiress of John Hamilton-Buchanan, Chief of Clan Buchanan. in April 1867.

Which Robert Jardine is "our" Robert? We don't have a definitive answer to that. The connection to Andrew Jardine and Elizabeth Johnstone is speculative. Robert's brother may have been William Jardine (1766-1852): "In Memory of Margaret Lockerbie, spouse to William Jardine in Milnbank, died 16th January, 1818 aged 27 years. Also the said William Jardine, late tenant of Milnbank, died 14th April 1852 aged 86 years. James Jardine, son of the above who died at Corsua 15th January, 1877 aged 61 years. Also Jane Johnstone wife of James Jardine who died at Corsua 8th September, 1881 aged 68 years. Also William son of the above James Jardine late farmer in Millbank who died 24 November, 1901 aged 61 years. Also Christina Buchanan MacNaught, wife of the above William Jardine, who died at Glasgow, 22nd October, 1922, aged 78 years."  Also, going further back in Millbank: "In Memory of Frances (sic) Jardine in Milnbank died June 19th, 1799 aged 81 years. Also Agnes Chalmers, his spouse died 4th May, 1789 aged 60 years. Also 3 children." We also found a David Jardine and Jean (Janet?) Dinwiddie having children in Lochmaben between 1772-1777 but no Robert.

Robert Jardine married Agnes Richardson (born about 1783 in Dryfesdale, Dumfriesshire - parents unknown) on November 10, 1805, in Annan. The OPR for Dryfesdale is "extremely irregular" with respect to the recording of births, marriages and deaths. Robert Jardine and Agnes Richardson may have had at least seven children: James (born Aug 14, 1806); Robert (born Jan 9, 1809); Elizabeth Jardine (born March 17, 1810), Janet Dinwoodie Jardine (born 1818), David Jardine (born 1821), William Jardine (born 1825), and John Jardine (born 1829). With James and Robert only the father's name was given (as Robert).

(There is also a Dave Richardson at Greenhill, a John Richardson next door at Hack and a John Richardson at Halleaths)

If the 1841 Census for our Robert Jardine had his age (59) correct, he would have been born in 1782.

"Robert Jardine in Millbank confessed himself guilty of Adultery with Jean Henderson formerly in Millhill and he agreed he might be admitted to give satisfaction according to the rules of the Church which was agreed to by the Session" - Official Parish Registry, Applegarth, Nov 26, 1797 One of the church elders mentioned in the this document was Frances Jardine.

Living at Millbank at this time were a Robert Jardine (possibly born Feb 8, 1756, in Applegarth with father listed as John Jardine) and Janet Wilson. They had at least five children: John (born May 15, 1788); Agnes (born July 16, 1790, in Muirhouse); Jean (born Sept 10, 1793, in Muirhouse); Isobel (born July 15, 1796, to Robert Jardine "formerly of Millbank"); and Francis (born May 10, 1799, in Millbank). - Scotland's People This Francis, born in Applegarth, Shepherd, was living with his wife Jane in Hutton in the 1851 Scotland Census.

Also living at Millbank was Francis Jardine. This is probably the Francis Jardine of Milnbank that died on June 19, 1799 at the age of 81 or his son. His wife Agnes Chalmers died on May 4, 1789, at the age of 60. A William Jardine, late tenant of Milnbank died on April 14, 1852, at the age of 86. - from Memorial Inscriptions, Applegarth Cemetery

Also living at Millbank at this time were Joseph and Janet Jardine. They had at least nine children all born at Millbank: Mary (born Dec 12, 1790); Robert (born March 25, 1792); Esther (born March 16, 1794); John (born Dec 4, 1795); Margaret (born Feb 4, 1798); David (born Dec 31, 1799); Janet (born Jan 26, 1802); Joseph (born June 24, 1804); and Christopher Douglas (born Nov 22, 1807). - Scotland's People

Robert Jardine's and Agnes Richardson's daughter Elizabeth was born in 1810 in Castle Milk Town, St. Mungo Parish. There was a John Richardson in the 1797 Farm Horse Tax Roll at Milkbridge with two horses. This may be Agnes Richardson's father or uncle. This John Richardson (wife unknown) may have had at least three children: John (born Feb 12, 1779); William (born April 23, 1781); and John (born Feb 14,1786), all in St. Mungo.

Farm Horse Tax 1797-1798, August 31, 1797, showing John Richardson of Milkbridge with 2 horses.

Agnes Richardson was born in Dryfesdale in about 1784 (1851 Census). Her brother may have been John Richardson (a Hand Loom Weaver, born Aug 19, 1784, in Lockerby, Dryfesdale). John Richardson's parents were James Richardson and Mary Little (from Scotland's People OPR). James Richardson and Mary Little had at least three children: Margaret (born Feb 26, 1780); Janet (born Dec 25, 1781); and John (born Aug 19, 1784). There was also another James Richardson and Mary Little that were having children in Dryfesdale between 1800-1803.

There was also a John Richardson whose wife was Mary Creighton (daughter of Andrew Creighton and Jane Barton, born about 1781 and died Aug 9, 1859, in Brydekirk). Janet Dinwoodie Jardine (married John Bell) named one of her daughters "Mary Creighton" (possibly after this woman who may have been her aunt or other relative). This John Richardson (born about 1780) died June 21, 1861, in Brydekirk, and his death certificate indicates that his father was James Richardson and his mother was Elizabeth Johnstone. There was also a James Richardson who died Aug 5, 1863, in Annan, whose parents were indicated as James Richardson and Elizabeth Johnstone (from Scotland's People). If you follow the Scottish naming pattern with Robert and Agnes, it's likely that James Richardson and Elizabeth Johnstone were Agnes Richardson's parents.

There was a James Richardson born in Annan on Dec 28, 1751, son of John Richardson and Ann Graham.

John Richardson and Mary Creighton had at least four children: Elizabeth Richardson (born about 1811), Andrew Richardson (born about 1816 - from 1841 & 1851 Census), James Richardson (born about 1819 - 1851 Census), and Jane Richardson (born about 1821 - 1861 Census). Elizabeth Richardson married John Little on November 24, 1843, in Annan Parish.

"This is the joiner's shop, a fascinating place with shadowy corners, the bewitching fitments of a carpenter's bench, a crisp carpet of shavings for small feet to scuffle and struggle through, and in invigorating smell of pine chips in the air. Here are made homely chairs and tables, clogs and pattens, yokes for milk pales, chests for bride-linen, cradles and innumerable other articles." - Reproduced with acknowledgement to Carol Stubbs

Agnes Richardson probably died before Statutory Registration came into effect in 1855.
Janet Templeton Jardine (wife of David) died on March 5, 1883 in Torthorwald at the age of 61.
We have not been able to find the death certificate for David Jardine to confirm this is "our" David.
This David may be another David that was living in Torthorwald in the 1841 census.
This David is probably David Jardine (son of William Jardine and Mary Dickson) born Nov 23, 1819, in Mouswald.

Robert Ward appears in the 1891 & 1901 England Census with wife Martha. "I think my Robert Robinson Ward is the grandson of Agnes and went on to marry into my great grandmothers family by marrying Martha Fawcett in the Aspatria area of Cumberland as it was then. I don't seem to be able to find him for a few years possibly because he would be working for farmers cash in hand - I have him born in Annan, Scotland and then died in the Wigton /Aspatria area in 1910." - MargaretClark60 on Ancestry.com

Robert Jardine White & Grace McMillan Quigley | Robert Jardine White & Anges Matheison Frame Sneddon

Agnes is my great great grandmother. Her son Thomas was my grandfather - father of my mother Winifred White. Here’s a thumbnail sketch of Thomas White: Thomas White (b. 1880-1950) was the son of John White and Agnes Jardine and was born at Smyllum Junction, Biggar where his father was a railway porter. At the time of the 1901 census he was a boarder with the Scott family at 42 Forest Place, Cumbernauld Station and worked as a railway signalman. He married Jessie Scott (b. 1883-1924) and by 1911, Tom was a grocer and living with Jessie at Masonic Place, Cumbernauld. They had four children – (Elizabeth) Betty, Jessie, (Agnes) Nessie, (Winifred) Winnie (born 8th Sept 1924). Jessie (Scott) died of cancer on Nov 13th 1924, two months after Winnie was born. Thomas later married Agnes Stewart (Nel) and then lived at Millview, Cumbernauld. At this time my mother, roughly age 10, who had been raised by an aunt, returned to live with Tom and Nel at Millview. Nel was a difficult woman. By the 1930s Tom was a hirer of motor vehicles and owned a bus called “Easy Osie”. From old family photos there were often outings to visit other family in Wigtown. - Iain Fairweather
