"I have heard my grandfather speak of the 'knoll' where Argyll used to sign all agreements between himself and his people , and on which he stood to call them out for any engagement. It was on the opposite side of the Shera river, a little north of Garron Bridge (drocharda'-ghearrain). My father used to say that fifty men could be called out by the sound of a horn, or whistle, to assist Argyll in any engagement from Glenshara. Names - Munros, Macintyres, Mackellars and Macnicols." - from Records of Argyll - Legends, Traditions and Recollections of Argyllshire Highlanders, by Lord Archibald Campbell

Records of Argyll - Legends, Traditions and Recollections of Argyllshire Highlanders, by Lord Archibald Campbell (53 MB pdf)

In 1716 Rob Roy moved to Glen Shira for a short time and lived under the protection of John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll also known as Red John of the Battles, "Iain Ruaidh nan Cath." John Campbell negotiated an amnesty and protection for Rob and granted him permission to build a house in the Glen for the surrendering up of weapons. "Traditionally the story goes that Argyll only received a large cache of rusty old weapons." A sporran and dirk handle belonging to Rob Roy can still be seen at Inveraray Castle. Rob Roy only used this house occasionally for the next 3 or 4 years. Some time around 1720 and after the heat of Rob's involvement at The Battle of Glen Shiel in the 1719 Jacobite Rising ('The Nineteen') had died down Rob moved to Monachyle Tuarach by Loch Doine and some time before 1722 Rob finally moved to Inverlochlarig Beag on the Braes of Balquhidder. - from Wikipedia

Yet another MacKellar kindred is to be found in Glenshira where they had the lands of Maam, Kilblaan and Stuckscarden. According to a letter written by Patrick MacVicar to the Dukeís Chamberlain, James Ferrier, in 1802, soliciting lands or posts for his young MacKellar nephews, the MacKellars together with the MacVicars had long formed part of the Leuchd-crios or personal bodyguard of the Campbell chiefs; the MacKellars had also been their musicians and the writer recalled seeing the harp in his grandfatherís house - this would have been around the middle of the 1700s. According to him the Harperís Ford in Glenshira is so named for the two family heads, of Kilblaan and Maam who would sit on a summerís evening on either bank playing to each other. Inverary Castle

Inverary Castle, c 1812

The great support of Inverary is the herring-fishery of Loch Fyne. It generally begins in July, and sometimes continues until the first of January. In the height of the season, according to the hyperbolical adage of the country, the loch contains one part of water and two parts of herrings. They are, and have been, from time immemorial, reputed the finest both in size and quality that Scotland produces. The extent of the loch, to its junction with the sea, exceeds thirty miles; and in the single bay of Inverary, at its inland extremity, 500 or 600 boats are sometimes employed in the fishery, and the groups of them with their circling nets form an interesting picture. The night is the time of fishing; in the day-time the crews take their rest, or employ themselves in extracting the entrails from the1ish they have taken, occasionally amusing themselves with singing Celtic ballads to the sound of the bag-pipe. Each boat dears on an average between £40 and £50 for the season, and in some very productive seasons 100, besides a supply a supply of fish reserved for domestic consumption. In an evening, when the fishing commences, a number of boats form a line across the loch, and uniting their nets, produce a chain often more than 100 fathoms long. The herrings swim at very uncertain depths, so that it is necessary to sink the nets to the depth which the shoal is known to take. Of course the success of the fishers must in a great measure depend upon their judgment or good fortune, in taking the proper depths; and it will frequently happen that the nets of one boat are fun of herrings, whilst those -of others scarcely take a single fish. They swim sometimes in twenty fathoms water, sometimes in fifty, and even at the bottom of the loch. The herrings, when cleared of the entrails, are thrown into a tub with a sprinkling of salt; they are then closely packed in barrels with alternate layers of salt, and after remaining in this state for a few weeks, they are repacked into other barrels for exportation. A considerable quantity, however, are sent fresh to Glasgow, Stirling, and other parts of the country." - from DANIELL, William. A Voyage Round Great Britain [1813-1823].

Clachan Slabs

These slabs were found at the Kilmorich Burial Ground near Clachan, opposite Cairndow, at the head of Loch Fyne. The burial ground dates back to around the 13th century and has many examples of stone carvings and the ruins of a small chapel. T P White comments that the designs on the stones are different to those he has seen in other districts so it is possible that these stones show regional variations. This illustration was taken from 'Archaeological Sketches in Scotland: Knapdale and Gigha', by Captain T P White (1875)

Andrew McKellar (son of Duncan McKellar and Janet Campbell) married Catherine Brodie on Dec 15, 1865, in Lochgoilhead, Argyllshire. They had at least ten children: Catherine (born Oct 9, 1866); Unnamed (born March 3, 1868); Janet (born Aug 6, 1869); Isabella "Bella" (born April 1, 1871); Hugh (born Oct 25, 1872); Duncan (born Aug 15, 1874); Violet (born about 1880); Maggie (born 1880); Hugh (born 1882); and Annie (born 1884). - from Andrew Paterson, TalkingScot.com posting, 1881 & 1891 Census' and Scotland's People

Isabella "Bella" McKellar & John Robertson | Annie McKellar & Henry Grocock

I am editing a local history book about the men and women from our village of Hallaton in Leicestershire who served in WW I. One, a man called Harry Grocock married the daughter of Andrew Mackellar. The marriage took place in 1909 in our parish church... Annie Mackellar and Harry Grocock went to live in new Zealand after the war where Harry tragically died in an accident... Harry and Annie had a son called Charles Andrew. Though he and Annie returned to the UK for a short while after Harry's death they returned to live in New Zealand.

- Max Bridgewater, May 15, 2015

Andrew MacKellar is my great great grandfather. His daughter Isabella (Bella), my great grandma married John Robertson of Perth. They had three children, the youngest being my grandpa, Andrew MacKellar Robertson who lived most of his life in Balloch on Loch Lomond, not too far from Cairndow and who remained close to his MacKellar cousins...

My dad has recently given me some very large bundles of assorted family records and I have been working my way through them on and off for the last few months. I have a bit of information about the MacKellars, some might be familiar to you and some not. There are numerous family photos in my dadís loft and hopefully Iíll get around to cataloguing those sometime soon!

In the meantime, from my dadís recollections:

I think itís accepted amongst the family that Andrew MacKellar was the son of your wifeís ggg grandfather (and mine also!). I understand from my dad that there was a bit of a skeleton in the cupboard and it wasnít much mentioned, but Duncan had a relationship (she may have been his common law wife after the death of Ann) with Janet Campbell and wee Andrew was the outcome!

Going back a bit further, dad seems to think that Janet Brydie was most likely a Brodie, the spelling of names being a bit more random in those days.

Iíve also found some notes, but am not sure of their provenance (maybe from dadís great aunt, Maggie MacKellar) that suggest John MacKellarís father was called Duncan (who married a Catherine MacIntyre) and his father, Archibald.

My grandfather, Andrew MacKellar Robertson was the son of Isabella (Bella) MacKellar. She left home and went into service, where she met and married a footman, John Robertson. He ended his working life as butler to Morton Grey Stuart, the 17th Earl of Moray - not a bad chap as my great grandfatherís retirement present was a cottage near Kinfauns Castle, Perth, as well as a small pension. he was also left some money in the Earlís will.

John and Isabella had three children, my great aunts Bessie (a spinster), Cathy (who married James Fleming and had a son, my dadís cousin, also James) and my grandpa Andrew.

Grandpa Andrew served an apprenticeship with the Perth railway company, but was made redundant on completing it, as steam gave way to diesel. At the time his Uncle Hughie MacKellar was working at Singerís on Clydebank and Andrew got a job there, where he stayed until his retirement, rising from stockboy to senior manager (he managed the night shift during WW2, when Singers made machine guns, not sewing machines, and survived the massive German bombing of Clydebank during that time).

Andrew had one son, my dad, John, who met my Welsh mum in Cardiff when he was serving in the RAF. They returned to Balloch and me and my sister Julie, were born and spent our formative years there, before the family moved to the south coast of England.

Andrew MacKellarís wife, Cathy died quite young, in 1903 or so, and after her death, Andrew never slept in the house again, choosing instead to sleep in a hut at the back which had only a bed, a paraffin stove and a lamp. Despite this he lived to a ripe old age and my grandfather knew him very well.

My grandpaís uncle Hughie (as previously mentioned) emigrated to Vancouver as a young man, with his pal Alan MacNab of Lochgilhead. Hughie was a talented piper and also taught Highland dancing. At the outbreak of the great war he joined up and was in the first wave of Canadian Scottish to reach Europe. He fought in France and made it through the war unscathed. He returned to Canada for demob and then came back to Scotland where he remained for the rest of his life.

Another of my grandpaís uncles - Duncan, was also a piper. He played in the Inveraray Pipe Band and was also a renowned curler. He had a croft on the Noble estate at Ardkinglas and was also the estateís water ghillie, fishing with Neville Chamberlain, amongst others. His son, another Duncan joined the police and served for a good time as sergeant on the island of Islay.
