It appears as though the Thom family was living at Burnhead from at least 1607 (Will & Testament of Johnne Thome of Burneheid) and 1769 (the birth of Agnes Thom, daughter of James Thom and Agnes Chalmers). Between these dates we know that John Thom (of Burnhead and father of James Thom) filed a Testament in the Hamilton & Campsie Commissary Court on Feb 24, 1725.

John Thom & Bethia Thom

James Thom's parents were probably John Thom and Bethia Thom (of Burnhead). They had a son John born Nov 30, 1699. The records for births in New Monkland only began in 1693. There was a William Thom "in Burnhead" who witnessed a marriage in 1710.

In the 1841 and 1851 Scotland Census, John Wotherspoon (60 / 71) was living on the Burnhead Farm with his wife Janet Black (daughter of Gavin Black and Agnes Watt) and their children . They were married in Jan, 1822. In the 1851 Census he was a "farmer of 90 acres employing 4 labourers". In the Ordnance Survey Name Books, 1858-1861, Lanarkshire, Volume 48, for Burnhead it's indicated that "This dwelling and offices is the property of and occupied by Mr. John Wotherspoon". Janet Black died on on the Burnhead Farm on March 29, 1868, at the age of 68 (Scotland's People).

Some Ancestry.com trees have Janet Martin's parents as James Martin & Janet McGhie, but that Janet was born in 1719 which would have her getting married at the unlikely age of 14. They had at least two children: Janet (born Feb 1, 1719); James (born April 25, 1714), in New Monkland.
