"This famous Scottish clan surname, recorded as Macall, Maccall, McCall, Maccaull, McKall, McKaile, and others, is a patronymic nickname, with two possible origin sources. Firstly it may be an anglicized form of the pre 7th century Olde Gaelic name "Mac Cathmhaoil". This is a derivation of the personal name "Cath-mhaol" which translates as "Battle Chief", or in this case "son of Battle-chief". An Alternate possibility is that it may be a variant of the patronymic Mac Cathail, "the son of Cathal" from the Olde Welsh "Catgual" meaning "war-wielder". Either way it is clear that the first nameholders were very much descendants of fighting men. The 'modern' surname is first recorded in Scotland in the latter half of the 14th Century, and is very much connected with Dumfriess. Early examples of recordings include Finlay MacChaell, who was bailie of Rothesay in 1501, and Finlay Makcaill, who was recorded in Bute in 1506. In 1607 Matthew McCall of Mayhole, Dumfriess, was charged with assisting the rebels, probably the Clan MacGregor, who had been outlawed by King James V1 of Scotland for persistent acts of violence against the government. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Robert M'Kawele, which was dated 1370, recorded as lord of Karsnelohe in the Laing Charters during the reign of King David II of Scotland, 1327 - 1371." - Name Origin Research 1980 - 2017

DNA: Jeff Waugh has an Ancestry.com match with J.A. who has William Dunn and Christina MacLachland in their tree with a son John born April 3, 1806, in Lanarkshire (no birth record found on Scotland's People). We also have a few Ancestry.com DNA matches with people who have Joshua McCall (born about 1686) and Julianna Trudy (born about 1691) from Antrim, Ireland, in their trees. For more information on Joshua McCall and Julianna Trudy see McCall Family - Scotland and Ireland to America - Pennyslvania, Georgia, Alabama & Florida. We also have an Ancestry.com DNA match with Thomas McCall (McCall Family Tree) who has Thomas McCall (died Bothwell, Lanarkshire in 1860) & Isabella Whitelaw and another Ancestry.com DNA match with "ciaccij" (Eckenrode Family Tree) who has their daughter Isabella (born March 17, 1855, in Bothwell, died Dec 20, 1913, in Barnesboro, PA, USA) in their tree, but we have not been able to make the connection to our Elizabeth McCall. We also have an Ancestry.com DNA match with Jason Sims (from New Zealand) who has traced his line to Angus Henry McColl (1888-1954) & Olive Lilian Harneiss (1894-1977). There is a tree on Ancestry that has Angus Henry McColl's parents as Henry Stuart McColl (1842-1900) & Joanna Cleland Crawford (1851-1928), but based on the shared matches having as common ancestors Samuel Orr & Agnes Littlewood, it's unlikely that the match is a McCall match.

DNA: Glenda Waugh has a MyHeritage DNA match with Joseph Kyle (142 cM) whose McCall line goes back to James McCall and Helen Craig. Thomas was his great grandfather. It goes: JK > Mary McCall > James > Thomas, 1/2 2C1R. She also has a MyHeritage DNA match (11.5 cM) with Lesley Caldwell. Thomas was her 3rd great grandfather. It goes: LC > Daniel Caldwell > Elizabeth McCall > James > Thomas, 1/2 3C. - Glenda Waugh, Jan 12, 2021 Glenda and Jeff Waugh both have a MyHeritage DNA match with Elaine Meek who has Janet McCall (daughter of James McCall and Helen Craig) in her tree. I have another DNA match back to Thomas McCall. It's with Mike Berry on ancestry. He's our half 3C1R. His line goes back to Martha McCall who married Gilbert Berry. Martha is James McCall's daughter and granddaughter of Thomas McCall and Agnes Walker. His tree doesn't go that far back but I was able to verify it via the ThruLines prediction. Martha McCall and Gilbert Berry emigrated in 1928 to New Brunswick with three sons. The daughter didn't emigrate; she was married and stayed in Scotland. Good confirmation that Thomas is our Thomas. - Glenda Waugh, Jan 26, 2021

Who was Christina Pearson? It's a complicated mystery...

Children Born Place Died Place
Isabellaabout 1835 Rutherglen, Lanarkshire July 22, 1902 Old Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire, Scotland
Elizabeth Oct 16, 1844 Scotland? Feb 15, 1922 Washoe, Montana, USA

Isabella McCall's parents were (according to her death record) Thomas McCall, weaver, and Christina Pearson. Elizabeth "Betsy" McCall's parents (according to her marriage record) were Thomas McCall, Hand Loom Weaver, and Christina Dunn. Christina Dunn may have died January 28, 1848, in Ochiltree, Ayr (no additional information available). There was also a Christina Pearson (daughter of John Pearson) who married Thomas Dunn, shipscarpenter, in Dundee on Dec 12, 1837 (Scotland's People). In the 1841 Scotland Census there's a Christina Dunn (30), pauper, living at Overgate in Dundee. Was Christina Pearson also Christina Dunn? In any case, it seems that both children shared at least the same father as indicated by the DNA matches.

When Betsy married Samuel Orr on June 4, 1868 the marriage record indicated that both of her parents were deceased (but that may not be correct)...

Thomas McCall & Agnes Walker

...In the 1851 Scotland Census there is a Thomas McCall (41), hand loom weaver, born in Girvan, Ayrshire, living in Lanark, Lanarkshire with his wife Agnes Walker, daughter Agnes (3), son James (4 months) and stepson Thomas Smellie (6). Agnes Walker, wife of Thomas McCall, died in Lanark on March 13, 1859. In the 1861 Scotland Census Thomas McCall (52 and born in Girvan) is living in Glasgow with another daughter, Isabella (25) along with Agnes (14) and James (11). James McCall (son of Thomas McCall and Agnes Walker) married Helen Craig on June 23, 1871 (SP) and that record indicated that his father was still living.

Isabella McCall (daughter of Thomas McCall and Christina Pearson) married Daniel Gibson in Lesmahagow on Nov 18, 1864. Her parent's names as indicated on the marriage record were Thomas McCall, cotton weaver, deceased, and Christina Person (Pearson) deceased. Daniel died on Sept 7, 1865 (SP).

Isabella McCall had at least four children born in Lesmahagow: William (born Jan 8, 1864 in Lanark, died after 1931); Isabella (born Dec 14, 1866 in Turfholm, died Feb 11, 1934 in Old Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire);  Lawrence (born Jan 21, 1870 in Kirkfieldbank, died March 30, 1921); and Christina (born Sept 10, 1872 in Abbeygreen). - Glenda Waugh & Scotland's People Ed. Note: The marriage and death records for Lawrence give his parents names as William McCall and Isabella Ferguson but we believe this info to be incorrect. As Lawrence was "illegitimate" his mother may not have told him the truth. The 14 Queen St., Govan address in Lawrence's  marriage record in 1894, on the 1901 census for Isabella and on Isabella's death record in 1902 prove the connection.

Family Group Sheet for Isabella McCall

In the 1871 Scotland Census Thomas McCall (64) is living in Lesmahagow a couple of doors away from his daughter Isabella and her children: William (6); Bella (4); and Laurence (1). There was a Thomas McCall (74), pauper,  who died in Carnwath on Jan 14, 1880 (no other information provided) who probably is Isabella's father. Isabella died in Old Kilpatrick, Dunbarton on July 22, 1902 and her parents were identified as Thomas McCall and Christina Pearson (both deceased). Bella was born "illegitimate" on Dec 14, 1866, (SP) at Turfholm, Lesmahagow. She married Kenneth Kennedy in Govan, Lanarkshire on Sept 12, 1884. Isabella McCall (wife of Kenneth Kennedy) died in Old Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, on Feb 11, 1934, at the age of 67.
